The Louvre has been one of the focal points of the art world since it was first reborn as a museum in August of 1793. Now home to some of the world’s most famous masterpieces, it is something that simply cannot be missed during your trip to Paris. A few of the most well-known pieces housed at the Louvre are highlighted below.
Perhaps the most famous painting in the world, the Mona Lisa, was completed in the 16th century by Leonardo da Vinci. There have been countless theories as to what’s hiding behind the figure’s secret smile, including suggestions that she’s pregnant, maternal, and that da Vinci may have even painted her based on his own image!
The Venus de Milo, sculpted around 130 BC, is believed to be a representation of the legendary Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite. It’s a marble sculpture, made famous for the mystery that surrounds her missing arms. Renowned because it was considered the epitome classical beauty, it has long been celebrated by both critics and artists.
Created in the 3rd century BC, the Victory of Samothrace is a marble sculpture of the Greek goddess of Victory, also called Nike. When you study the sculpture, pay close attention to the authentic human pose of the statue and the way the clothes on it appear to be blowing in a strong ocean breeze, as those are considered to be especially notable.
